Silent extortion is going on in the Rohingya camps of Cox’s Bazar. Active militant groups and criminal gangs have been extorting money from Rohingyas living in the camps on a daily and monthly basis. Inhuman torture is inflicted on ordinary Rohingyas if they show inability to pay their dues. Even the criminal gangs are involved in conflicts over extortion control.
Chittagong Range DIG Anwar Hossain said, “We do not know any information about extortion in Rohingya camps.” Necessary steps will be taken in this regard after investigation. Similarly, Teknaf Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizur Rahman also denied extortion in Rohingya camps.
A resident of the refugee camp, who did not want to be named, said, “Rohingyas are unhappy with the extortion of militant organizations and terrorists.” No one can do business here without paying tribute. Inhuman torture is carried out when someone refuses to pay tribute. So the residents of the camp have to live on subscription.
Apart from Arsa, the militant groups RSO, Islami Mahaj and Jamiatul Mujahideen also collect daily and monthly donations. In addition to militant groups, 20 terrorist organizations, large and small, also extort money from ordinary Rohingyas.
Terrorist organizations extort money from ordinary Rohingyas as well as criminal gangs active in the camps. Terrorists are often embroiled in disputes over extortion and the dominance of camps. As a result, there are always casualties.
