A mobile court has sentenced four people to seven days’ imprisonment each for damaging a hill at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The four are: Abdur Rahim of Jamtali area of Ukhiya, Md Toha of Rohingya camp number 16, Abdur Rahim of Nuniarchhara of Cox’s Bazar town and Kalam Hossain of Pekua upazila in the district.
On information, a team of Armed Police Battalion from Jamtali camp caught the four when they were cutting the hill in Rohingya camp number 16, opposite to the Camp-in-Charge’s (CiC) office around 1:30am yesterday, said Md Hemayetul Islam, commanding officer of the APBn-16.
Four spades used in cutting through the hill were seized from the spot, our Cox’s Bazar correspondent reports quoting the commanding officer.
The four were produced before Ukhiya Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Aminul Ahsan Khan who gave the the verdict, said the official.
Many people were penalised for damaging hills outside a Rohingya camp in Ukhia. “But this is the first punishment against any person for cutting hill inside the Rohingya camp,” Aminul Ahsan Khan said.
